Stacey Tranchina has been of counsel to the firm since September, 1999,
when she resigned from the New York Maritime Law firm of Bigham Englar
Jones & Houston after the birth of her first child. [Stacey took the
path into maritime waters naturally, following her father, Sam V.
Tranchina, who for many years headed the Ocean Marine Department of the
Great American Insurance Company.] Immediately upon her graduation from
Fordham University School of Law in 1988 where she received the
Moore-McCormack Award in Admiralty, Don Jr. hired Stacey to work with
him in the Marine and Environmental Insurance and Reinsurance department
at Bigham Englar . Stacey holds the distinction of establishing
nationwide precedent in the field of maritime products liability with
her summary judgment victory in Karshan v. Mattituck Inlet Marina and
Shipyard, 785 F. Supp. 363 (E.D.N.Y. 1992), which is the seminal case on
this subject. She co-authored an article on ocean cargo insurance with
Don Jr. which was published at 66 Tulane Law Review, 371 (1991), and
which continues to be a primary source of reference for courts to this
day. As an active member of Martime Law Association, Stacey
authored/edited annotations of various Ocean Cargo and Protection and
Indemnity policy forms. Stacey is a very active member of the
Farmingdale School District, having served on the Executive Committees
of multiple PTA units, including the Special Education PTA, and also
serving as a Parent Member for the Special Education Department. She
has become fluent in the law of Special Education in order to address
the special educational needs of her son. In addition to her volunteer
work supporting and advocating for children, she also is a member of the
New York State Bar Association’s Committee on Animals and the Law,
having chaired multiple subcommittees in the past, and she presently
serves as the Vice Chair of the Legislative Subcommittee. Stacey also
is a member of the Nassau County Bar Association. Stacey is admitted to
practice before the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York as well
as the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Stacey handles insurance
coverage and commercial litigation matters as well as probate and
guardianship matters within the firm.
